Intro to Rifles

Course Description
The course is beginner-friendly, hands-on, and a lot of fun. When we’re done, you’ll be able to safely and enjoyably operate and shoot a semi-automatic, lever-action and bolt-action rifle.

Classroom: Training starts promptly at 8:30AM at our Silverlake studio where we review gun safety rules and introduce you to 3 different rifle-types: semi-auto, lever-action, and bolt-action. You learn how to operate, load, hold, aim, and fire each one. Next, we explore the science of bullets, ballistics, and the art of acquiring targets using both glass optics and iron sights.

Lunch: Around 12:30PM, we head to Oak Tree Gun Club in Newhall (a 35-minute drive) for lunch together at their on-site bar and grill. The menu includes burgers, fries, a vegan burger, a turkey sandwich, breakfast options, and more. There’s something for everyone, but feel free to bring your own lunch instead.

Shooting: After lunch we walk over to the rifle range (5-minute walk) where you fire a total of 65 rounds at distances up to 130 yards from the five rifles pictured below:

1. Carbine, Ruger Mini-14. [Caliber: 5.56mm NATO]

2. Carbine, Marlin 336 RC. [Caliber: .30-30 Winchester]

3. Carbine, Ruger 10/22. [Caliber: .22 Long Rifle]

4. Precision Rifle, Savage AXIS II Precision. [Caliber: .223 Remington]

5. Carbine, Ruger PC. [Caliber: 9mm Luger]

Everything Is Provided: We’ll bring rifles, ammunition, hearing and eye protection, but you are welcome to bring your own rifle(s) to train with if you choose.

Personal Note from the Instructor:
The rifle is where I started 40 years ago. Military rifles like the M-16, M-14 and the British FN were my specialties. At Left of Center Gun School we’ve intentionally created the course using rifles the State of California does not classify as “assault weapons.” However, if you are interested in learning the AR platform, visit our Private Instruction page for private training options and pricing.

“This is a great place to get over any fears you have! I took the rifle class and it was so fun and a great experience. I can’t wait to bring my wife to the pistol class. I immediately wanted to take more classes. David is so great and I highly recommend the rifle class, or any class!”
